Nosher and the Squirly Lights 2 - 29th November 2004
It's nearly too much fun: the sheer joy of having a digital SLR and a few beers up the pub first cause Nosher to revisit a photographic stunt not attempted since 1985, when Nosher was 18 and shortly after getting his first camera as a birthday present. One of Nosher's most favourite bands ever (call me square, I don't care) was Genesis, and the cover of the 1978 album "Then There Were Three" was always beguiling. These photos, in the same way as those taken way back in 1985 (known as "Nosher and the Squirly Lights", and used on this very website as the left-hand column header), are a kind-of homage to that album cover: a torch, a 30-second exposure, and a flashgun covered with a 2-ply tissue (as a diffuser) are all that is required. None of the usual per-photo narration is needed: basically there are several photos in the back garden, a few in the front and a number with multiple flashes. One has Nosher running around in Greenhouse "B"; the three at the end use a different white balance (shooting as if under tungsten). The red streaks are caused by holding a thumb over the end of a mini-Maglite torch (wow, that's like blood...); the green, paradoxically, by shining the torch through some blue wool, and the orangey background is caused by light pollution from Eye industrial estate (give us back the night sky, fascists.). Oh, and look out for an attempt to write "Shag" and "Genesis" in torchlight, with mixed results...
